Streaming security: five steps for a safer connected home

A relaxing evening in front of the TV starts before you press Play. Your television, phone and router are all part of the same connected home. Avoid using the same password for your email, apps and other services. Turn on a second verification step where it is available. If someone messages you asking for a sign-in code, do not share it. Check the request through a channel you already know and trust. Next, check the router. Its administrator password is not necessarily the same as your Wi-Fi password. Follow your provider's or manufacturer's instructions to protect that access and install updates. Before changing a network setting, record its original value, then check that your television and other essential devices still work. On the television and streaming player, check for updates and verify where your apps come from. Review permissions too, including the microphone, camera and personalization settings. Menus vary by model. Use the documentation for your own device and turn off only the features you do not need. A message says your account will close in ten minutes. Pressure is not proof of a genuine emergency, and a logo can be copied. Instead of following the message's link, open the known website yourself. Do not give remote access to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. When asking for help, show the problem, not your private information. Crop the screenshot and redact identifiers, notifications and codes. Export a copy, reopen it and inspect it before sending. Do not rely on a simple blur to protect sensitive details.
